The Return Of Woods
Woods (40/1) claimed the last of his titles in this event in 2013 and he has a close affinity with this venue as he also won the 2008 US Open when it was played on the South Course of Torrey Pines.
The Farmers Insurance Open involves a round on each of the North and South Courses on Thursday and Friday before the cut, with the weekend's final two rounds taking place on the South Course.
The Big Three
It is Dustin Johnson who heads to California as the 9/1 favourite with Sky Bet and the US Open champion has been in good touch of late as he finished runner-up to Tommy Fleetwood in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. The American must overcome the effects of the long flight from Abu Dhabi this week as he bids to better his previous best of a tie for 3rd at Torrey Pines in 2011.
Jason Day is a former winner of this tournament but his title defence ended with a missed cut last year, although it is fair to say that the current world number one went on to have a decent year after that! There have been concerns about Day's fitness this term but he showed that he was fighting fit with a tie for 12th at the Tournament of Champions earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Hideki Matsuyama has been absolutely flying with three wins in his past six starts worldwide but was a tie for 27th at the Sony Open a sign that his form is beginning to cool? Perhaps, but the skinny 14/1 price for a player who has missed the cut on his last two visits to Torrey Pines ensures we will be looking elsewhere anyway.
We prefer to side with players who have course form here and Brandt Snedeker fits the bill for his title defence. The 2012 and 2016 champion has an excellent record in this tournament as he has racked up two wins, two runner-up spots, one third place and two other top-20s to show from his ten visits, while he also tied 9th when the 2008 US Open was held on the South Course in 2008.
The 36-year-old has an excellent strike-rate in California, where he has won four of his last seventeen starts, and the man who won the Fiji International in October looks primed for a crack at winning a third title here.
Tip #1: Brandt Snedeker (each way) @ 30/1 with Betfred.
Jimmy Walker is another who tends to enjoy playing in this part of the world as two of his six career wins on the PGA Tour have come in California and his record at the Farmers Insurance Open reads: 8-4-MC-7-4. The PGA Championship winner opened 2017 with a tie for 9th at the SBS Tournament of Champions before illness contributed to a missed cut at the Sony Open. Rested and restored, Walker is ready for a big four days at Torrey Pines.
Tip #2: Jimmy Walker (each way) @ 30/1 with Betfred.
This is a venue where the wind tends to blow strong and regular readers will know that Marc Leishman is a favourite of ours in such conditions. The Australian went so close to landing the Open Championship at a wind-swept St Andrews in 2015 and the consistency of Leishman ensures we will be keeping him on-side at what looks a massive price this week.
The 33-year-old has missed just one cut in fifteen starts, including a top-five effort at the CIMB Classic last month, and his form either side of the new year is progressive as he has gone 24-21-20 in his past three outings. Add in the fact he has twice finished runner-up at Torrey Pines and you have the makings of a very tempting 80/1 each-way shot.
Tip #3: Marc Leishman (each way) @ 80/1 with Paddy Power.
