Justin Thomas Is A Top Tip For The Safeway Open
- 11 Oct 2016
2016 Safeway Open Betting Preview
The Safeway Open, formerly known as the Frys.com Open, was set to kick-off a new PGA Tour season with plenty of fanfare as Tiger Woods was due to make his return to golf on Thursday but the former world number one has withdrawn and we can instead focus on the action. The tournament has attracted a couple of Ryder Cup stars as Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar are teeing up but we are looking elsewhere for a touch of value in California...
|13th October - 16th October||Odds||Won/Lost||Bet|
| Justin Thomas (each way)
|@ 25 / 1||VCBet|
|Brendan Steele (each way)||@ 50 / 1||VCBet|
|Martin Laird (each way)||@ 66 / 1||Betfred|
Paul Casey is the 14/1 favourite (Betfair) after racking up seven top-tens during an excellent 2016 campaign but the stark reality is that he has won just one title in the USA during his career and his price is plenty short enough.
Kuchar is next best at 16/1 after tying 21st here in 2014, while his American Ryder Cup teammate, Mickelson, is a 20/1 shot as he bids to enhance an excellent record in West Coast events, albeit 'Lefty' hasn't won for more than three years now. Meanwhile, defending champion Emiliano Grillo is available at 22/1.
This tournament has been held on the North Course of Silverado Country Club in Napa since taking on hosting duties in October 2014 and Brendan Steele has fared well in both appearances here. Steele tied 21st in 2014 before a poor final round led to a tie for 17th after he had led for three rounds in 2015. The Californian has enjoyed a fine 2016 campaign as he racked up nine top-25 finishes, including a couple during the Fed Ex Cup play-off events, and he looks like decent each-way value at 50/1.
Tip #1: Brendan Steele (each way) @ 50/1 with Bet Victor.
Meanwhile, Justin Thomas is another with a decent record here as he tied 3rd in Napa twelve months ago and it was a result that propelled him towards a first career title as he went on to win the CIMB Classic in Malaysia the following week. Thomas returns to the course in very good form as his tie for 6th in the Tour Championship at East Lake last time out was his third top-ten finish in six outings and he ranks as our best bet for this week.
Tip #2: Justin Thomas (each way) @ 25/1 with BetVictor.com.
Martin Laird is another who ended the season in decent fashion as he tied 18th at The Barclays, which was one of five top-25s in the last twelve months. The Scot also tied 2nd at the Canadian Open as he again showed an appetite for shining when the big guns are away from PGA Tour events, which perhaps augurs well for this event, and he did tie for 3rd at Silverado in 2014.
Tip #3: Martin Laird (each way) @ 66/1 with Betfred.
