Fresh from tipping Dustin Johnson to win on the PGA Tour last week, we have got three tips for The Honda Classic at the PGA National Golf Club in Florida. The Leading Contenders
Scott arrives for his title defence off the back of a run of six consecutive top-fifteen finishes since October but he is plenty short enough at 12/1 in the absence of Jordan Spieth, Johnson et al.
Sergio Garcia is also towards the front of the market after tying 8th at the Honda Classic in 2014 before finishing runner-up last year. In six previous outings on the Champion Course, the Spaniard boasts an actual scoring average of 69.92 but the recent Dubai winner disappointed at Riviera last week and is 18/1 in Florida.
Justin Thomas can also be backed at 18/1 after finishing tied 3rd in this event last year, although his form has cooled since his two stunning wins in Hawaii earlier this year.
We prefer to side with another 18/1 chance in Rickie Fowler as he has finished in the top-25 in four of his five appearances at The Honda Classic, including a career-best tie for 6th last year. Fowler actually led at the half-way stage twelve months ago and we fancy he has unfinished business after tying for 4th in Phoenix recently. The American is going close without quite getting over the line but he should be fresh after taking last week off and now is the time for the world number fourteen to start closing the gap on his peers at the top of the world rankings.
Tip #1: Rickie Fowler (each way) @ 18/1 with Bet 365.
The Each-Way Tips
Fowler currently ranks 14th for greens in regulation on the PGA Tour this season and GIR stats have proven to be a key indicator of performance at the Honda Classic, which augurs well for our next selection. Russell Knox, who ranks sixth for GIR, looks to be underrated at 33/1 after racking up four top-elevens already this season and he is another who should be raring to go after taking a week off following his missed cut in Phoenix, which halted a run of eighteen successive cuts made.
Knox is ready to bounce back to form at a course where he has finished 2-3-26 in three previous visits and the Scot boasts an actual scoring average of 69.08 at this venue.
Tip #2: Russell Knox (each way) @ 33/1 with Betfred.
Finally, Brendan Steele has made all six cuts at The Honda Classic, finishing in the top-fifteen in his past two, and his consistent recent form could be rewarded in Florida. Steele is on a run of twelve successive cuts made since the US PGA Championship and he has won the Safeway Open, as well as racked up six top-25 finishes, including a couple of top-sixes, in that time.
Tip #3: Brendan Steele (each way) @ 45/1 with Boylesports.
