The Leading Contenders
Justin Thomas has been in red hot form, winning three tournaments during the 2016/17 wraparound season, and he is an 11/1 favourite for the Valspar. Thomas has finished in the top-20 in his past two visits to Copperhead and tied 5th in Mexico last week but his price is a bit skinny for our liking.
Henrik Stenson is a point further back at 12/1 and the Swede has gone 4-11 in his last two appearances at the Valspar, although it remains to be seen what effect the illness that forced him to withdraw from Mexico last week has on his performance.
Meanwhile, Charl Schwartzel is a 40/1 shot for his title defence and the man he beat in a play-off twelve months ago, Bill Haas, can be backed at 30/1. Patrick Reed almost made our shortlist as he lost in a play-off here a couple of years ago, although it is worth noting that he hasn't finished in the top-ten of a full-field event in six months.
Instead, our three-pronged attack is headed by Ryan Moore, who is very much a horse for this 7,340 yard course as it offers a tactical challenge that Moore should enjoy. The American really came to the fore in 2016 as he produced an excellent effort to make the American Ryder Cup team and he opened 2017 with a tie for 3rd before tying for 28th in Mexico last week. Moore will be looking to step his game up ahead of the US Masters and he will relish a return to Copperhead, where he has gone 5-3 in his past two visits.
Tip #1: Ryan Moore (each way) @ 28/1 with Bet Victor.
Like Moore, Gary Woodland has a strong record at Copperhead as he won here in 2011 and tied 8th in 2014, and his recent form suggests he should go close to a first win since the 2013 Reno-Tahoe Open. Woodland has finished in the top-20 in five of his last seven starts on the PGA Tour, including a tie for 2nd at the Honda Classic a few weeks ago, and the weaker nature of the Valspar field should play into his hands.
Tip #2: Gary Woodland (each way) @ 28/1 with Betfred.
Finally, Charles Howell III doesn't win often enough for our liking - his last victory was in 2007 - but he is a player who consistently offers each-way value and he can do so again this week. Howell has finished in the top-fifteen in five of his past eight visits to Valspar and the 37-year-old has been in excellent form of late as he hasn't missed a cut in nine starts, racking up seven top-fifteen finishes in the process.
Tip #3: Charles Howell III (each way) @ 40/1 with Paddy Power.
