The US Open gets underway at Oakmont on Thursday and there are a whole host of bets on offer for golf punters to sink their teeth into this weekend away from the obvious. The outright market does of course remain the most popular bet but there is still plenty of value to be found elsewhere and we have selected some of the more eye catching markets to take a closer look at ahead of the second Major Championship of the year.

Dustin Looks A Big Price To Get Off To a Hot Start

No player in the field this week has a better game than Dustin Johnson when it comes to taming the Oakmont beast with the American possessing both power and accuracy from tee to green. Time and time again we have seen Johnson go close to winning a Major Championship and although he has ultimately fallen short on a number of occasions, he is often in contention over the first few rounds which means we have to follow him when it comes to the first round leader market. He is massive off the tee which will suit one of the longest and toughest courses on planet earth and history suggests that he is one of the fastest US Open starters in recent times.

He shot a 65 at Chambers Bay last year at the US Open and has continued that trend recently with a 64 to take the first day lead at the Memorial and we fancy him to do exactly that again at Oakmont, with the 20/1 on offer from Bet 365 about him being first round leader looking like a great punt and a fine addition to our portfolio this week.

Fitzpatrick and Holmes To Have A Good Week

Few golfers are as hot as young Matthew Fitzpatrick at the moment with the Englishman already marking himself out as a superstar of the future thanks to a number of mature displays. He picked up his 2nd European Tour title of his career earlier this month when he won the Nordea Masters and with a Ryder Cup place within his sights, the 21-year--old is arriving in Oakmont with confidence sky high.

Fitzpatrick has a solid game in all areas from tee to game which should also put him in the frame at Oakmont and with that and his current form in mind, a top 20 finish for young Fitzpatrick looks a fair price at 9/4 with Bet 365 this week.

Another player who we fancy to be at the upper end of the leader-board come Sunday night at Oakmont is JB Holmes of the USA. Holmes has been in decent form this season with top five finishes at the Memorial and at the Masters back in April but it is driving that could well put him in the frame this weekend with the man from Kentucky possessing the 2nd highest average Driving distance on the PGA Tour at the moment. He is going to be in position to make birdies and that means the 7/2 on offer from Coral about Holmes also finishing in the top 20 does make some appeal.
